Madrid Appreciation Post

These mountains are always just a train ride away

I love Madrid so much.  Sometimes, (like now) I just need a little push to remember that I’m in Spain and that I do love it here. Honestly, even two months in I still sometimes have those surreal moments where I re-discover that I live here.

Temple of Debod is definitely a top 10 sunset location

For example, this past week was a WEEK. I started work this week, which is great… aside from the stress caused by jumping from planning two classes per week to planning TEN. On top of that, I was still desperately searching for an apartment. We finally found one with five days to spare! However, this wasn’t before we shed blood, sweat, and tears and were stood up by multiple landlords.

Refugees welcome

All of this, plus my usual Spain frustrations (SO slow to do anything, inconvenient business hours, lack of communication ETCETERA) had me feeling some animosity towards this city that I usually love.

Living next to the biggest park in Madrid has some perks.

I hate feeling like this, so I was inspired to spend an afternoon enjoying the sun and taking pictures of some of my favorite places in Madrid. Because, even if everything is WAY harder here (and in Spanish), it is so, so worth it.

Taking this time to explore and appreciate my new home really helped to put things into perspective for me.

Where in the USA can you casually stroll past a palace?

Life is life no matter where you live, and if you move abroad to escape your problems I can guarantee they will find you, and bring along some new challenges with them.

That being said, sometimes a change of pace is exactly what we need, and life abroad can provide just that. Especially here in Madrid, where that new pace is slow as molasses…
